Tasting Notes
As ever, for a true and pure 100% single vineyard bottling, this Vintage 1997 exhibits all the classic Tietjen Vineyard characteristics: The wine is fragrant with red berry fruit, red cherry, vanilla and a hint of eucalyptus; flavors of bright, red berry fruit and a slight earthiness follow; and the mouth-feel is medium in the attack, full-bodied, well balanced, beautifully textured with its classic long finish. The wine has aged so very gracefully these last 20 years. In its youth the wine was defined by elegance. In 2017 it is defined by its supple sophistication. Drink now through 2022.
Production Notes
In the 1980s our good friend and partner, Hugh Tietjen, acquired a small parcel in the Rutherford area of Napa Valley. This location was selected as an ideal site to grow cabernet sauvignon for Monticello Vineyards. Located not far from the base of the Mayacamas Mountains on the western side of Napa Valley. The vineyard, like each of ours, carries its own signature stamp – and for the Tietjen Vineyard it is Elegance. We offer a very limited amount of this wine as a single vineyard designated cabernet sauvignon and in any given year 5 – 10 barrels are produced.
Winemaker Notes
The 1997 vintage is regarded to be among the best of a series of excellent vintages of the decade. The long, consistent, dry growing season resulted in extra hang-time adding an extra dose of physiological ripeness resulting in extremely rich, deep texture and concentrated ripe berry fruit.
