Corley Family Napa Valley

2014 YEWELL VINEYARD Cabernet Sauvignon Image

2014 YEWELL VINEYARD Cabernet Sauvignon
CORLEY

This wine is expressing rich aromas of rich, ripe, red berry fruit with undertones of sweet blond oak, light caramel, and mocha. On the palate, the wine is lush with a deep core of ripe fruit on the mid palate. It is wonderfully balanced through to the finish, with richness in depth of body and also in character of tannins.

The Yewell Vineyard is a tiny property located on Ehlers Lane in the St. Helena sub-appellation of Napa Valley. The fruit from this vineyard has been coming to Monticello Vineyards since approximately 1982, just after the vineyard was first planted. The rocky well drained vineyard produces intense small berried clusters that produce similarly intense wines. The wine from this vineyard has been an important component our Corley Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon ever since.

In the late 1990s Nancy and Dave Yewell acquired this elegant St. Helena property. After farming it for a few years, an intensive replanting effort was initiated. Special planting materials, trellis design and systems were utilized to achieve the highest quality from this particular site. The Corley family has worked very closely and collaboratively with the Yewell family to create a stunning wine. While the wine continues as an important component of the our Corley Reserve Cabernet, we have produced this Single Vineyard offering since 2006.

Ratings
WINE ENTHUSIAST: 91 Points (March 2019) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WINE SPECTATOR (James Laube): 90 POINTS A stylish effort, featuring rich, juicy dark berry, loamy earth, crushed rock and gravel notes that impart personality and muscle. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- JAMES SUCKLING RATING: 93 Points "A red with very pretty dark fruit, dark chocolate, leaf and dried flower character. Medium to full body, fine tannins and a delicious finish. Drink or hold." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CONNOISSEURS’ GUIDE *ONE STAR (90 POINTS) Fine example of wine without notable flaws. An interesting, if different wine that stands slightly apart from most of its companions, this very rich, full-volume working from the Yewell Vineyard is a touch sweeter in tone with a close-to-succulent, ripe cherry focus that reminds of top-shelf Merlot. It is full-bodied and pleasantly supple on entry, and its tannins are relatively late to arrive, but, in the end, it has just enough of young Cabernet’s expected grip to dissuade hasty drinking and call for four or five years of waiting instead.
Vineyard Notes
Located at the northernmost end of Napa Valley, our Yewell Vineyard lies between the Mayacamas and Vaca Mountains in the St. Helena AVA. The radiating heat from the mountains warms the vineyard and creates a warmer climate resulting in fruit that is full-bodied with ripe dark fruit flavors. Climate: Warm, due to greater protection from western hills, with less fog or wind incursions. The narrowing of the valley floor provides more heat reflection off the hillsides. Mid-summer temperature peak is often in the mid- to high 90°F range (31 to 35°C). Soils: Principally gravelly silt loams, sedimentary in origin, and gravelly alluvial soils with rock. Principal Characteristics: ripe, violety aromas and rich, but supple flavors and firm tannins.
